Complete Denture/

Removable Partial Denture

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues.  Two types of dentures are available - - complete and partial dentures.  Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Complete Dentures can be either “conventional ” or “ immediate. ”  A conventional denture is made after the teeth have been removed and gum tissue has begun to heal, and is ready for placement in the mouth about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed.

Immediate Dentures are made in advanced and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.  As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However bones and gum shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal.  Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they required more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.

Removable Partial Denture usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base.  Partial Dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw.  Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position.  A partial denture can be connected by a conventional metal frame work or a metal free thermoplastic material.

Implant Supported Dentures are also an option.  Unlike a regular denture, which rests on your gums, Implant Supported Dentures are anchored in your mouth by dental implants.  Most often, this form of denture is placed in the lower jaw because dentures tend to be less stable in the lower jaw.  However Implant Supported Dentures can be placed in the upper jaw as well.  In this type of denture, your Implant Supported Denture snaps into place on the implants surgically placed in your jaw.  This prevents the denture from slipping or coming loose in the mouth.  It also removes the need for denture paste or adhesives.  The Implant Supported Denture can be removed at night for cleaning or, if you have a fixed Implant Supported Denture placed, your dentures will act as permanent teeth.
